Project Overview
The Marketing Team for the Discovery Kids App asked for looping videos to use for their Facebook Page cover.
Challenges
The design firm working with Discovery Kids had established an art style guide that mixed floating content bubbles with colorful spheres. Though the brand guidelines discussed how the bubbles moved, we had yet to do any motion work with them.
As I researched Facebook cover videos, I also noticed that many companies cut loud, long, busy trailers for their videos. The Discovery Kids app trailer had already been shared on Facebook. I needed to do something different for the cover video, and I wanted to ensure it wouldn’t be paused by viewers.
Solution
Because I wanted the video to run continuously in the background, I envisioned it as a moving picture rather than a trailer. I wanted it to loop seamlessly and to make sense without audio.
The style guide described the spheres’ motion as gentle but energetic, like bubbles floating through the air and sometimes bouncing off of each other. This lent itself well to the looping motion I envisioned.
I made two versions of the bubble motion: a faster-paced, version with flying icons, and a more subdued, floaty version. I also ensured there was a version with video/audio and an MOS version. The “flying icons” version was also designed to work at a 1:1 aspect ratio for when Discovery Kids rolled out to other platforms, like Instagram.
